In a previous post, we talked about how mParticle’s data filters enable mobile app developers to take ownership of their mobile app data by giving them the power to control which pieces of information to share with each service – in short, the power to choose “what goes where.” In this post, we’ll look at an orthogonal aspect of data ownership: the ability to choose how much of your data to share with each service.
User sampling: The valve on your data stream
Let’s say your app has achieved such enormous scale (think DAUs in the tens of millions or more) that it would overwhelm your analytics service of choice, but you’d still like to leverage the unique reporting insight that they provide. Alternatively, you might be interested in a cost-effective approach to testing multiple analytics services, before choosing a winner and “turning on the fire hose,” so to speak.
This is where mParticle’s user sampling comes in. It’s a feature that enables you, with just a few clicks in our dashboard, to send app data for a chosen percentage of your app’s total user base to any service provider on the mParticle platform. To get started with user sampling, click on the blue data filters button in the upper-right corner of the services page:
At the top of the data filters screen, you should see a row of sampling percentages – one for each service that you’re sending data to. Initially they should all read “100%,” indicating that you’re sending data for 100% of your users to the given service. By changing the percentage in one of these columns to 10% and hitting the blue Save button, mParticle will stop sending data to the corresponding service for all but a random selection of 10% of your users:
